Fifty Percent Grey:

"Fifty Percent Grey" nominated for the 2001 Best Animated Short Oscar.
This 3D animated short was made entirely by Ireland-based, Robinson, a 3D animator, compositor and designer using Discreet's 3ds max software and Discreet character studio software for character rigging.
"3ds max has the best polygon modeler on the market and best all-round feature set," said Ruairi Robinson, Fifty Percent Grey's creator.

This is a proof that a single artist or small team of animators with a good story idea and 3ds max can create powerful and visually impacting stories that compete with, and share company with, large animation facilities with big teams, proprietary in-house software and larger budgets.

The Cathedral:

"The Cathedral" won the 2002 Siggraph Best Animated Short Award. It was the cover feature of the Computer Graphics World Magazine in July 2002. The man behind the film was Tomek Baginski of Platige Image (Poland). A 15 months of work using Discreet 3ds max and character studio resulted in realisation of his creative vision.
“The workflow and productivity of 3ds max and character studio gave me the tools I needed to exactly create the environment and mood I envisioned in my mind’s eye,” said Baginski.

All aspects of lighting in 3D are included, drawing from the visual arts world, seeing what can be learned from the holistic arts and how we can apply these lessons to CG. The theory is supported by practical tutorials in the four main software packages: "3D Studio Max", "Maya", "LightWave" and "SoftImage". The tutorials alternate between these four packages and each tutorial is provided on the CD-ROM in the alternate packages as well to ensure complete coverage.
